I would treat the slash ships in your fandom with more gravity if you didn't treat them like they were the end-all be-all of shipping and the "Death Note" fandom in general.

Seriously--the mind boggles at how SO MANY PEOPLE could watch a psychological murder mystery about a notebook that kills people, and come out of it with nothing but gay bishounen porn to show for it!

(Before anyone asks, I'm not trying to come across as homophobic. I actually buy that Light and L might have a thing for each other. I'm complaining about how very, very overgrown this fandom is with shipping in general and slash shipping in particular)

So I was exploring the “Shiki” fandom recently and I stumbled across an interesting observation, which I'm pretty sure is relevant to many fandoms all over the place.

Sooooo, I have here my current year-end Anime Calendar!

The Anime Calendar is my scheme for which anime I watch at which time of year (as well as when I'll be most likely to write fanfiction, say, for any given anime). I created this scheme when I was a senior in high school, based around certain things I noticed about my favorite anime; and I've been using it for my own amusement ever since. Of course, since then there have been a lot of things that I've added, moved, and subtracted as I gain and lose interest in watching certain things and as my thoughts and feelings on anime change. I'm hoping that by next year I'll have this calendar finalized based on the best of the anime I've seen. Here's the current lineup:

The other anime series I checked out this holiday season was “Princess Tutu.” Now, I'd heard great things about “Princess Tutu” from my friends before I started watching it, and I was intrigued by the focus on storytelling in the grand scheme of the plot. Now that I've watched it, I have to say, it lives up to the hype.

Sooo... in honor of the winter holidays this year I've decided to watch three anime between now and New Year's: "Rozen Maiden," "Princess Tutu," and the Satoshi Kon movie Tokyo Godfathers. Expect to see more commentary on them in the future.

Sooo... I decided to rewatch "Baccano!" this year. My first experience with "Baccano!" came when I was a college freshman. It was the first show I watched with my school's anime club, and from the moment I saw the first episode it was love at first sight (so to speak). I watched the entire show my freshman year, but now I want to watch it again.

Anyway, there's a couple of things I'm looking out for that I think I might have missed the first time around. First of all, I intend to determine conclusively this time whether or not I think Lua Klein is my favorite character. It's been a suspicion of mine for a little while that she is, but I've never had the guts to actually say it because her role is relatively minor. However, now that I've confessed to liking the most unlikable character in all of "Shiki" I think I can fess up to my having her as my favorite, if indeed this is the case.

Speaking of "Shiki," I'll also be tracking Todd Haberkorn's and Ian Sinclair's characters, Firo and Dallas (respectively). I've only rewatched one episode and already I'm fangirling Dallas like crazy, so I wonder if I've developed a genuine soft spot for loser characters or if I'm just turning into an Ian Sinclair fangirl in general. Firo, meanwhile, is just as fun and badass as I remember him; but after the shock (in a good way) of seeing Todd Haberkorn turn over a new leaf in "Shiki" I'm not sure if I find Firo refreshing or boring since he plays those kinds of roles so often. And then there's J. Michael Tatum, who provides the voice of Seishiro in "Shiki" and Isaac in "Baccano!" Now, what's interesting is that in both of these shows his characters have fairly similar mannerisms--but they're treated very differently simply because of the overarching tone of the show (heart-wrenching horror drama vs. twisted black comedy).

So far I've only rewatched one episode, but already I'm seeing things I didn't catch the first time around. For example, Luck and Firo actually mention the Rail Tracer in the very first episode--though they don't reveal who he is or what his business is. Additionally, for some reason, I did not remember ever getting to see the Daily Days's Vice President's face. But apparently you do see it quite a lot in the first episode. For that matter, I'd also forgotten just how sexy Kent Williams's voice is in that role!

So... yeah. BACCANOOOOOOOOO!!!!

So, tonight, after one of my most stressful Halloween seasons and election weeks to date and just before I leave on yet another trip, I decided to unwind a little by watching Redline with my family!

I just happen to own a copy of Redline since I asked my mom to get it for me, and, well, it was just as much fun as I remembered it from Genericon this past year. I'm virtually certain my parents and sister loved it too (because how could you not?). It really is one of those shows that's just more fun to watch in a large group, so you can all laugh together.

I find this hilarious, because this Halloween I watched a ton of really deep, meaningful, serious anime; and Redline, let's face it, is a far cry from being a show that provokes thought. But you know, sometimes it's just good to kick loose with something fun.

Three to four years ago now, I first started watching episodes of the original “Neon Genesis Evangelion” series. Less than two years ago now, I attended an Anime Boston panel where I got to meet cast members of the “Evangelion” remakes coming out, including Spike Spencer (Shinji), Brina Palencia (Rei), Trina Nishimura (Mari), and J. Michael Tatum (Kaji). However, it was just this October that I finally got around to picking up copies of the remakes currently available on DVD. Even now, watching the DVD's really brings back the excitement and wonder I experienced when I first discovered the original series as an older teenage girl.

Holy crap, this got long!

Aah, “Shiki,” how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that “Shiki” is probably my favorite horror anime ever, and I've seen a lot of horror anime in my time, including such heavy-hitters as “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” “Elfen Lied,” and “Hellsing” (the original series, anyway). So, it was a little hard for me to decide how to write this without giving in to the temptation to gush all over its face, but I'll do my best.

Additionally, there's really no way to discuss the plot or characters of the story without giving it away, so you were warned.

See the rest (WARNING: SPOILERS!!) )

Go on; you know you want to watch it!

I'd just like to preface this by relating a bit of background here. Since Otakon 2011, which I volunteered at, I knew that the dark magical girl show “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” existed and was coming to the States. This past summer, at Otakon 2012, I went to a celebratory panel with Christine Marie Cabanos, Sarah Williams, and Lauren Landa, who provide the English voices of Madoka, Sayaka, and Kyoko, respectively. And although I hadn't actually started watching “Madoka Magica” at that point, I had such a great time at the panel and autograph session (where I was ecstatic to have Lauren Landa say two whole sentences to me that didn't have to do with the show) that I decided I just had to watch “Madoka Magica” this very Halloween.

Fortunately, “Madoka Magica” turned out to be fairly short, which meant it was easy to fit in—and, if anything, I found myself having to pace my viewings of it so that I wouldn't finish the entire thing in a single night (then “Shiki” came along...). This is a good show. It's compelling, it draws you in, and it really makes you feel for all the various characters. I'm not sure if I'd say it's quite as good as “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” or even that it's as groundbreaking as it's been made out to be—though more on that later. But there's a lot it does well.

WARNING: There's really no way to talk about the plot of “Madoka” without giving away the story, so if you haven't seen it yet (and you want to be surprised) DO NOT READ ON!!

So, those of you who have access to Cori Falls' rants probably remember the way she railed against the notion that Jessiebelle could ever, EVER be sympathetic or have any psychological reason for her behavior:

Okay, I'm watching an anime with a large cast of motley, diverse, beautifully-rendered characters, who develop in all manner of cool ways.

So why in the hell did I have to latch onto the one character whom nobody likes or cares about, either in or out of universe?!
redwoodalchan: Silly Drifloon from "Red Sun" fic (Default)
I've recently become frustrated with this vampire anime I've been watching (which will go nameless so I don't spoil anything for the time being). A couple of episodes ago I got a bit attached to this one character, and now I think he's dead. And not just in the way the vampires are (un)dead (though there is also that), but actually killed off for real. And that just makes me sad.

See, I really thought this character was going to be important. He was a viewpoint character, both as a normal human and as a vampire. He was also an annoying asshole whom nobody liked, either in universe or out--though in-universe, whether he completely brought this upon himself or deserved all of it is not entirely made clear. But once he turned into a vampire, I really saw the potential for him to get a whole lot less annoying and more interesting as he grew into this new role in the story. It wouldn't be the first time a character got cooler and less annoying after being turned. What if he became a legit villain who kicked ass down the road in the interest of getting (what he assumed would be) his due?

But now I haven't seen or heard from him since that first scene of him as a vampire, and he hasn't appeared in any crowds I'd think he'd appear in. So either he's being very carefully hidden for some reason, or he's dead. That's the other thing: I don't actually know for a fact that this character IS dead, because he was never actually killed onscreen (or if he was, I missed it). It's possible that he may resurface at some point (no pun intended) but I suspect he won't. And I feel cheated. Yeah, that's it--cheated.

Ah, well. It's still a rockin' show regardless.

I know this is going to seem really obvious, but I love how all the girls in "Madoka Magica" are color-coded.

Madoka: Pink
Sayaka: Blue
Homura: Black
Mami: Yellow
Kyoko: Red

Just like little dolls ^-^

I'm just wondering if the colors serve any purpose (like the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" color schemes) or if they're just there to keep to the traditions of magical-girl shows like "Sailor Moon" or "Tokyo Mew Mew."
