To the atheists in the Iron Maiden fanclub...

Look, I'm glad that you're so happy and content in your atheistic ways, but for fuck's sake, if I specifically create a forum post asking RELIGIOUS Iron Maiden fans what they think of Iron Maiden's music, that's not your cue to come in and announce yourselves as proudly atheistic (duh)! Last I checked, you can't be both religious and atheistic--the moment you become one, you stop being the other. Go somewhere else where I'm not trying to draw specifically RELIGIOUS fans out of the woodwork!

No love,
Me

I'd complain but the problem is threads in the fan club get derailed all the time, so I'll be the one who looks mean-spirited if I do.But if atheists hijack my thread and start waving "Starblind" around like a victory flag as proof that look, Iron Maiden were pro-atheist all along, I think I might throw a fit.

(I'm sorry if I sound overly harsh on atheists. It's not that I think there's anything inherently bad about atheism, really. What I don't like is atheists who try to change my or anyone else's mind about their beliefs, or hold themselves up as inherently more enlightened than religious people. To me they're no better than fanatical evangelical Christians)

Cerulean Skies: A Furuichi Teraoka Fanmix

This is just me wanting to make a fan soundtrack for my favorite "Xam'd" character. The songs I picked are as follows:
Contains MAJOR spoilers (also some rather creepy sexism and suicide references) )

On a Billy Joel song

I just realized the other day, that Billy Joel's "The Entertainer" kind of comes across as an ancient version of the "What others think I do/What I really do" meme. It takes a job that everyone thinks of as really glamorous, and points out that it's a job like any other and that musicians, whatever fame and success they may enjoy, still have to eat and pay bills, and their success is entirely contingent upon their ability to please their fans and the music industry in general.

An Introduction to Iron Maiden's Music

So now that there’s a story on Das Sporking that’s got people talking about Iron Maiden, I figured it’d be helpful if I made something explaining them to those still not in the know. I recently spent a stint in England studying abroad, and while I arrived in the UK a casual fan of Maiden, I returned to the States an absolutely adoring fan.

See what I have to say... )

And…that’s about it for my own experience of Maiden. Rock on! \m/

What's so special about "Hallowed Be Thy Name," anyway?

As any metalhead will tell you, “Hallowed Be Thy Name” is about as good as a metal song gets. But what is it about this song, really, that makes it so special? Obviously that’s a matter of opinion. Some people like its complex melodies, some people like its philosophical lyrics, some people like its immersiveness, and so forth. To me, though, it goes beyond that. Plenty of Iron Maiden songs, and just metal songs in general, have gorgeous, complex melodies and philosophical lyrics. Yet, “Hallowed Be Thy Name” still stands as one of heavy metal’s crowned jewels. It’s different from your average metal song, and is a big aspect of what sets Iron Maiden apart from most other metal bands.

My two cents... )

So…yeah. That’s my long-winded explanation as to why “Hallowed Be Thy Name” is so special.

"The Hazards of Love" vs. "Still Life"

Hey, it’s Valentine’s Day! I think I’ll celebrate by reaffirming my love of Iron Maiden and being rude about the Decemberists!

Warning: suicide, death, and talk of rape and abuse )

Cool website if you like analysis

The website SongMeanings.com is an open-access site where you can create an account and write analyses and interpretations of your favorite songs, and read what others have written.

Bear in mind that it is open-access, which means a lot of garbage gets onto it, but a lot of gold gets onto it as well.

Reflections on this past Christmas and so forth

This past Christmas I listened to tons of Iron Maiden. Then I watched This is Spinal Tap with my family. On Christmas Eve my family and I went to see a play called, well, "The Play That Goes Wrong," which is probably the funniest play I've seen since "Spamalot" or "The Drowsy Chaperone" and is basically what it sounds like.

I've noticed that Iron Maiden seems to be taking the place in my heart that has for the longest time been occupied by anime. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Hopefully I'll keep being into anime for at least the remainder of the school year, especially since I hope to give more panel presentations at cons (I had some good, long thoughts about Masao Murasako and Clair Leonelli earlier today, so there's some hope). I'm not sure what I'll do with my Iron Maiden CD's when I get back to the States. I might play some of them when I get wistful about England, and my favorite one, "The Number of the Beast," I might play more regularly. I might keep "Somewhere in Time" in my car to play for my friends, since that's the only one I feel comfortable sharing. I think I may end up putting "Dance of Death" and AMOLAD into cold storage until my next trip to England, though, as they're just so heavy I don't know how much more of them I can take.

Today my dad, my sister and I went on the London Eye, and then I spent the next few hours exploring a carnival nearby until it came time to go see the third Hobbit movie in IMAX 3D. Super cool. I was interested in how they basically made Thorin a tragic character, something I remember him not at all being in the books.

(And now I'm wondering what Cori Falls's reaction would be. Did she ever comment on The Hobbit, or only LOTR?)

Tomorrow we're going to see a Shakespeare play, and it'll be an all-day thing. I'm so excited.

I've been on the Iron Maiden pages on TVTropes

It's obvious that whoever wrote those pages is a completely obsessed fan (or most likely fans) who worships the ground they walk on and probably thinks beautiful white chrysanthemums and monkshoods grow from between their toes. Pretty much every other thing that finds its way onto those pages somehow leads back to how totally awesome and special Iron Maiden are, and how they pretty much define CMOA, and how everything they do is amazing and wonderful and perfect--to the point of absurdities like praising a band member for striking a guy with his car because he was running late to a concert as an "Awesome Moment," despite the fact that a moment's logic and reason would tell you that striking someone with a car for any reason is bad, no matter who's doing it!

Look, I make no secret of the fact that I adore Iron Maiden. I think they're a great band and in some respects a very admirable one--but there is a limit to the amount of praise even they are entitled to! I'm just worried about what'll happen if someone tries to mount an honest, reasonable criticism of them or anything they've done on TVTropes. Will Iron Maiden become the next Harry Potter, with people making excuses for EVERYTHING they've ever done wrong, and expecting the worst of anyone who disagrees like they currently do for people who find Snape more sympathetic than Harry and his ilk?

Before anyone asks, yes I've edited those pages. But I haven't been responsible for the more insane bits like the aforementioned car thing.

I had an Iron Maiden brainwave the other day!

So as I was listening to the Iron Maiden songs on my iPhone the other day I came to the conclusion that if I didn't want to listen to ALL my Iron Maiden songs at a time (I've got 11 on my iPhone and they get looooooong), I could split them up depending on the time of day, because some sound better in the daylight and others sound better at night.

Daytime songs:
"Wrathchild"
"Run to the Hills"
"The Trooper"
"Aces High"
"Different World"
"Isle of Avalon"

Nighttime songs:
"The Number of the Beast"
"Fear of the Dark"
"El Dorado"

Any-old-time songs:
"Hallowed Be Thy Name"
"2 Minutes to Midnight"
(aka: my personal favorites)

...As I think of it I could probably do the same for my Judas Priest songs (though I only have six of those and there's a bit more overlap)

Daytime songs:
"Breaking the Law"
You Got Another Thing Comin'"

Nighttime songs:
"Living After Midnight"
"A Touch of Evil"

Any-old-time songs:
"Electric Eye"
"Painkiller"

(no subject)

So the other night I walked into the kitchen to make dinner and my flatmates were playing Billy Joel. It's good to know he follows me even to England. :)

Also, I've rediscovered an old gangsta rap song!

It's that "Try to catch me ridin' dirty" song that everyone knows about, which I remember being super popular when I was a young teenager. Rap Critic's now done an episode on it (and it's really great)!

If you don't have time to watch the video, the gist of the review he gave is that the song is technically very competent and enjoyable to listen to, but the actual content leaves something to be desired (as it's ostensibly about racial profiling but the guys in the song actually were committing crimes).

Pet Peeve #495

You know one thing that really grinds my gears? People who can't tell the difference between liking something they see in media and condoning it. People who think that liking a nasty or unpopular character automatically means that you would support that character in real life.

And, I recognize that there will always be people for whom the likes of Edward Cullen really are their perfect men. But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the notion some people seem to have that merely liking a character automatically means that you support/want to have sex with that character, regardless of your actual reasons for liking him or her. The hatedom against Snape from the Harry Potter books seems to be a classic example of this--there seem to be a few people who will always believe the worst of Snape's fans, as though the mere fact that they like him and find him sympathetic means that they support him calling Lily a bad name or picking on Harry. There have even been people who've tried to peg fans of Snape as racist (which admittedly partly had to do with the genuinely bad behavior of a few people who happened to like Snape, but STILL).

But that's simply not how it works. I like lots of characters who do lots of really reprehensible things, but I recognize that their behavior is wrong and don't try to emulate them. Liking Legato Bluesummers from "Trigun" does not make me a mass-murdering cannibal out to destroy humanity. Liking Clair Leonelli from "Heat Guy J" does not make me a mad bomber. Liking Mao from "Code Geass" does not make me a deranged psychopathic manchild who'd cut up her love interest with a chainsaw. Nor would I condone the behavior of any of these characters if I met them in real life. So why should liking Snape make anyone a racist? In all likelihood, there's a goodly amount of people (such as myself) who like characters such as the ones above, probably only because they're not real and their actions have no real-world consequences. Isn't part of the point of fiction escapism? And isn't part of escapism the idea that you can get close to things that horrify you while still remaining perfectly safe?

In addition, there is a difference between merely liking something and liking nothing except that thing (the latter of which I'd argue actually is cause for concern). As much as I love Mao, for example, I'd like to think I'd be freaked out if I met someone who went on about how he was the GREATEST ANIME CHARACTER EVER!! and every other anime character was worthless. In a similar vein, the mere fact that I happen to own a Cannibal Corpse album shouldn't mean anything by itself--but, if I refused to listen to anything that was not Cannibal Corpse, then I could see how my family would be worried.

...Yeah.

Something I realized about "My Immortal"

So, back when I was in middle school, I heard the Evanescence song "My Immortal" played CONSTANTLY on the radio. It'd play as I was going home from school on the bus (and sometimes in the morning too) and I got so sick of it it wasn't even funny.

Yet, by the time I got to high school it was gone from the radio. And these days, the only connection most of us seem to have to it comes in the form of a certain infamous Harry Potter trollfic!

OH, THAT'S GOOD!!

It's official--I have found my new favorite video over at That Guy With the Glasses' Todd in the Shadows.

It's this one!

Oh, my god! This is the best video! Seriously, it blows my old favorite, the Top 10 Worst Hit Songs of 2004, out of the water! It's just so FUNNY (and the songs are actually good)!

Warning: video is rather NSFW.

Revisiting Smash Mouth's Album: Astro Lounge

So, on the loooooooooooong bus ride back to Upstate New York from the Forward on Climate rally in DC, I decided to do something I haven't done since my last trip to California (several years ago now), and that's listen to Smash Mouth's album Astro Lounge from start to finish.
