Book Meme
1. Favorite childhood book?
Anything by Gerald Durrell.
2. What are you reading right now?
Let's see... there's Patience by Allan Lokos (do nonfiction books count?). I was planning to start reading Bram Stoker's Dracula and Gabriel García Márquez's The Autumn of the Patriarch pretty soon.
3. Bad book habit?
Buying books which I don't read. It's the main reason that the vast majority of books I own are nonfiction things you can drop into and out of at will.
4. Do you have an e-reader?
No
5. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
Usually, one book at a time; but it depends.
6. Least favorite book you read this year (so far)?
Twisted! Oh, dear god—Twisted!
7. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Considering outside my “comfort zone” consists of YA high-school dramas and little else, I virtually never step outside it anymore now that I'm past that stage of my life.
8. What is your reading comfort zone?
Horror, particularly gothic horror, high fantasy, cyberpunk—that sort of thing. Also, nonfiction, particularly pertaining to science, travel, or food.
9. Can you read on the bus?
No; I like to stay alert.
10. Favorite place to read?
Anywhere there's nothing else to distract me—either in an office, a library, or the living room in my home.
11. What is your policy on book lending?
If I finish a book, or hang onto it long enough without reading it, I'll usually happily give it away (if it's fiction—I'm a bit more possessive of my nonfiction books).
12. Do you ever dog-ear books?
Sometimes, if I don't come to a reasonable stopping place when I'm interrupted.
13. What makes you love a book?
Content I can get into. Characters I like. Messages I care about. That's all, really.
14. Favorite reading snack?
I almost never eat and read at the same time.
15. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Not sure if this counts, but part of the reason why I'm no longer a Harry Potter fan is probably because of how much hype it received back in the day, and I just got sick of everyone acting like it was the greatest thing ever despite its flaws.
16. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose?
EVERY LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD! If I had to choose, probably Japanese or maybe Korean.
17. Most intimidating book you've ever read?
I read Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment when I was fifteen, after my English teacher specifically called attention to how challenging of a read it was.
18. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
The books by George R. R. Martin—I've gotten interested in them after seeing a few episodes of the Game of Thrones series, but I hear they're just really long and all the good characters die.
19. Favorite Poet?
I only rarely read poetry... though I remember liking Thomas Hardy as a writer in general.
20. Favorite fictional character?
I remember really liking Bazarov in Fathers and Sons when I read it. Tess Durbeyfield was pretty good too.
21. Favorite fictional villain?
In books, my favorite villain is probably Geiseric, a German world dictator from the sci-fi war novel The Keepers series. Bad book; crazy awesome bad guy.
22. Books I'm most likely to bring on vacation?
Travel guides, and environmental nonfiction stories like Moonbird (a book about Red Knot sandpipers) and Greasy Rider (a book about a man touring the country in a biofuel-powered car).
23. The longest I’ve gone without reading.
Probably several months. Longer if you don't count nonfiction books.
24. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
Breaking Dawn. After awhile it was just too annoying and stupid to be worth the effort.
25. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
My mind tends to wander a lot, just in general.
26. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
The sixth Harry Potter movie was great.
27. Most disappointing film adaptation?
I can't say—that's not the sort of thing I pay much attention to. I guess I was sorry that Series of Unfortunate Events got just one movie, which only comprised the first three books.
28. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
I've been trying to avoid the Fifty Shades of Grey series, given all the bad things I've heard of it.
29. Name a book that made you angry.
TWIIIIISTEEEEEEEED! [Smashes things]
30. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
When I started reading the Series of Unfortunate Events series I don't think I was expecting to like it; but I came around when I realized it was more funny than sad ninety percent of the time.
31. Favourite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Travel guides, cookbooks, animal books....
